Woodrow Kroll: First John 3:14, "We know that we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death." Look at chapter 4 and verse 7, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God."
OK, there you have it, two of the most direct statements in 1 John as to whether or not you're saved. You will know that you are born again if you have love for the others who are born again. You have a genuine love for other believers.
